The Pyrenees foothills and ranges create different microclimates, making this a diverse grape-growing area. Summer days are warm and dry, and the nights are generally cool. Winter is quite cold. Rich loamy soils and heavy clay quartz soils produce wines with complex flavours. There are many vineyards with cellar doors open for you to taste the spicy reds the area is known for, especially the premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Chardonnay. Although vines were first planted in this region in 1848, the modern phase of winemaking in the region dates back to 1963 with the brandy making business, Chateau Remy. Since the 1970s, over 70 wineries have been established in the Pyrenees region.
