A strange story. In 1868, human remains were discovered in a tree at Elmhurst. The skeleton was believed to belong to a squatter, sheep farmer on illegal land, who had been murdered. He, Young, and two others, Coleman and Bell, took a flock of 1,200 sheep to nearby Beaufort for sale. Young mysteriously disappeared. Coleman, dressed in Young' s clothes, proceeded to make a sale to the local butcher. The transaction of money raised suspicions. Unable to pin the murder on Coleman or Bell, police convicted Bell of sheep stealing and imprisoned him for five years. The only witness who could identify the body in the tree died just prior to the grisly discovery.
