    Details
    • Let's transport ourselves back to a time when this land was explored by the first white people. See what they saw, appreciate the beauty of the Pyrenees State Forest and marvel at the valleys rich with wine-producing vineyards. Pack a picnic basket to enjoy the idyllic Avoca Falls. Stop and sample full-flavored wines along the way as you extend your story trail. Your curiosity and palate will be rewarded.

Let's venture into the Pyrenees State Forest. Expect breathtaking panoramas. Descend to the valley floor and enjoy a waterfall valley that yielded gold in times gone by. Learn about the abundant plant and animal life in this unique Australian habitat.

You may like to toast to the beauty of the region at the wineries en route. The Pyrenees were named by Major Thomas Mitchell. The ranges reminded him of the Pyrenees in Europe, where he had served as an army officer. We have a suggestion: a picnic at the waterfall. At story point 3, there is a beautiful picnic area downstream from the Avoca waterfall. It's a magic spot to relax and take in the sounds and scents of the Pyrenees State Forest. Your story trail takes you west of Avoca to the foothills of the Pyrenees State Forest. The tour will take about three and a half hours. The distance is 36 kilometers and walks will be short. Your story points include Vineyard Views, Governor Rock Lookout featuring Major Mitchell, Australia Felix, Pistols at Dawn, then on to Avoca Waterfalls and Flora, Number Two Creek and Fraser Car Park.

Story trails are best experienced using any mobile device with headsets. They are free to download and share. Mobile phone users should enable auto-rotate to allow landscape viewing. We will guide you to each story point along the trail. When you hear the laughing kookaburra, pause the video then play when you arrive at the next story point.
